Added value of a small pond

A pond brings life and can therefore be an attractive addition to your garden. Even a small pond attracts many animals such as birds, amphibians and insects like dragonflies and butterflies. We speak of a small pond when it contains less than 10,000 liters of water. This can be a patio or mini pond, but also a landscaped small pond in the garden. Installing a pond can be done all year round, as long as it doesn't freeze. We would be happy to give you more tips on how to create and design a modest pond.

How do you build a small pond?

Important for construction of a small pond is the location. A place with between four and six hours of sunlight per day is suitable. Especially too much sun can be wrong, because it promotes algae growth. A small pond is at least -80 to -100 cm deep and 120 cm wide, so that plants and animals have enough space and the pond can function. Larger than 120 cm wide is only better.

When excavating the pond, the deepest point is -80 to -100 cm and it is advisable to make a shallower edge along the bank. This is how you create zones. If you dig this down to about 20 cm deep, this is a perfect place for various aquatic plants to grow. If you choose a gradually sloping bank edge, you will be helping animals to gain access to the water. Cover the pond with special pond liner that folds well in corners and bends. Then the decorating of the pond can begin.

What plants in a small pond?

Have you added pond substrate and bacteria then it's time for the aquatic plants. A beneficial diversity of aquatic plants will keep your pond clean. Consider species such as yellow iris, hornwort or a small water lily. It is easy to purchase a complete plant package for the design of the small pond. Our packages have been carefully put together by Simon and contain a selection of plants that will ensure that your pond remains healthy and does not produce algae growth. Check out the selection in packages for 1000, 2000 or 5000 liters of water:

How do you maintain a pond?

The beauty of building a small pond in the garden is that it subsequently requires little maintenance. Give your pond a good start with a layer of pond substrate of 8 to 10 cm thick. You can also add pond bacteria such as Bacta Clear, which help to keep the water clear. Together with the right water plants these will ensure a biological balance in your modest pond and you will hardly have to worry about it.

Small pond with fish

In a small pond it is possible to keep fish. Species such as the common goldfish, goldfin or shubunkin are suitable for this purpose. Choose only a few specimens to prevent the pond from becoming too full. If there are too many fish living there, you will have to supplement your food. In this case, the water may become acidic and excrement will not be properly cleaned up by the present ecosystem. The pond is out of balance and will pollute.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you make a small pond in the garden, make sure it is between -80 to -100 cm deep and about 120 cm wide (wider is also allowed). This will give your pond plants and later aquatic animals enough room to grow and live.

You certainly can. If you put in enough (4 pieces per m2) pond plants, including oxygen plants, and you add pond substrate and bacteria, a pond pump is unnecessary. Your pond then has all the ingredients to keep itself in biological balance. Read more about a pond without a pump.

The water in your pond will stay clear if you place enough oxygen plants in your small pond. They absorb CO2 and give oxygen to the water. It may be that there are too few of them in your pond and the water is no longer nice and clean. The new planting will make the pond water clean again. Does the water turn green? Then you are suffering from algae. Read what to do about floating algae.

At Van der Velde Waterplanten, we prefer to work without superfluous equipment, expensive tests and remedies. That's why Simon doesn't recommend a filter, even for a small pond. You can do without one if the basic natural elements are present. These are: pond substrate on the bottom, a mix of pond plants and finally pond bacteria. He explains all about it in his step-by-step plan for constructing a pond.

Prevention is better than cure.
